On 23 October, Instagram’s App Store page added Apple TV through a separate tvOS build, version 66.0. It is free and requires tvOS 26.0 or later. The same version and requirement appeared in Spain and seven other stores checked: the UK, Brazil, Mexico, Germany, France, Japan and India. Meta has never published a country list; earlier announcements named only the US. No press release or blog post accompanied it, leaving the listing as the sole source and capping what can be reported.
- No fanfare: Apple TV support emerged via the App Store, with no Meta explanation of timing or features.
- Viewing first: Copy lists Reels, longer videos, live shows and cross-device resume, not publishing or messaging.
- One entry: Contrary to some reports, it is not standalone. The Instagram listing, identifier and developer now include Apple TV; iOS is at 452.0.0, tvOS at 66.0.
- High bar: Instagram demands tvOS 26, thirteen major versions above YouTube’s tvOS 13. TikTok lacks an Apple TV app, an Apple store search shows.
What the copy confirms, and what it omits
Meta frames it as a viewing surface:
Watch the creators and content you love on Instagram, now on the biggest screen in your home. Enjoy Reels, watch longer videos with friends, catch live shows, and discover something new, all from your TV.
Another stated capability:
Pick up where you left off across screens
Those are the only confirmed features. No source says whether the full feed, Stories or direct messages are visible, or if viewers can post or comment. Fire TV, announced in December 2025, allowed likes, comment reading and reshares; nothing indicated typing. Big-screen Stories and a horizontal-video area were tested in June 2026, with no confirmation they reached this build. Apple TV sign-in is undocumented. Fire TV required an Instagram account, allowed five per app and supported a TV-only account. How a remote navigates vertical video on a horizontal display remains unanswered; Meta, Amazon and launch coverage are silent. By 25 October 2026 the tvOS listing had zero ratings and no professional review, so describing use would be invention.
A methodical push into the living room
The business reason is visible. Nielsen’s Gauge panel gave YouTube 13.8% of all US television viewing time in May 2026, more than any broadcaster. Instagram head Adam Mosseri acknowledged the gap at Bloomberg’s Screentime event in October 2025:
We’re exploring TV
He said TV had mattered to YouTube and TikTok and that Instagram should have explored it years earlier. Since then the sequence has been deliberate: Fire TV in December 2025, US-only; Google TV in February 2026; Samsung Smart TV in June 2026, from 2020 models onward, when Meta said Instagram was available:
across the majority of connected TV devices in the US
Apple TV was the missing piece. On the 21 October earnings call, chief financial officer Susan J. Li said third-quarter relevance changes raised Reels time:
by over 4 %
She added that overall Instagram time per user:
reached an all time high and grew double digits year over year
And:
Nearly 45 % of recommended Reels are now less than 1 day old
Television was never mentioned in that transcript.
The requirement is the story
The entry threshold is more revealing than the launch. Instagram demands tvOS 26; YouTube runs on tvOS 13. Thirteen versions separate them, and TVs are replaced far more slowly than phones. A working older Apple TV cannot run an app whose core job is vertical video. For a company that has just made viewing time its priority, that floor is hard to justify.
TikTok has no Apple TV application; an Apple store search returns nothing. Meta is entering a space its closest short-video competitor has not occupied, and doing so quietly. That reticence suits the listing’s emphasis: longer videos, shows and live broadcasts sit beside Reels, not Reels alone. Reels is the hook; the living room is being prepared for other formats. Since June, Meta’s declared aim has been long-form video, episodic series and live programming.
Reading a storefront change firmly carries risk. Meta could announce the product tomorrow, add countries or rename it. What is documented is the listing on 25 October 2026. Instagram first brought Reels to TV through Amazon Fire TV, and later arrived on iPad fifteen years after that device debuted. The fight is now for the television, which also explains why Google TV added Veo and a Shorts row. Apple TV was the last major surface, claimed with a version number and little else.
